Defining LTL

Less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping refers to the transportation of freight that does not require the full capacity of a trailer. Rather than one shipper paying for an entire 53-foot trailer, an LTL carrier consolidates freight from many different shippers — often dozens per trailer — bound for the same general destination, and each shipper pays only for the portion of space and weight their shipment occupies.

A typical LTL shipment weighs between 150 and 10,000 pounds and is built on one or more pallets, in crates, or in cartons banded together. Anything smaller usually moves as a parcel (through carriers like UPS, FedEx, or USPS); anything larger, or anything that makes sense to move as a dedicated trailer load, moves as full truckload (FTL). LTL sits in the middle, and that middle ground is precisely why it is complicated: it requires a shared, standardized system for figuring out how much space and weight any given shipment actually consumes relative to every other shipment sharing that trailer.

Why LTL Is Structurally More Complex Than Truckload or Parcel

In a full truckload move, pricing is comparatively simple: an origin, a destination, an equipment type, and current market capacity determine the rate. The truck is the truck; there's no need to compare your freight to anyone else's. In parcel shipping, complexity exists (dimensional weight, zones, surcharges) but it's been abstracted away behind a single, easy-to-use published rate structure that most shippers never look under the hood of.

LTL inherits complexity from both worlds and adds its own layer on top, for one core reason: shared capacity requires a fair way to allocate cost among many different shippers, whose freight has wildly different physical characteristics — density, stackability, fragility, handling requirements — even when it weighs the same. That allocation problem is what freight classification, density rules, and accessorial charges all exist to solve. Nearly everything in the rating and classification portion of this course traces back to that single structural fact.

Example: A pallet of bowling balls and a pallet of empty plastic buckets can both weigh 500 pounds, but the buckets take up far more cubic space, are more easily crushed, and are harder to stack anything on top of. Classification exists to price that difference fairly.
