Ryan Poynter

LTL Executive, Author & Educator — 15 years on both sides of the LTL equation.

Ryan Poynter

Ryan Poynter has spent his career on both sides of the LTL equation — as the shipper responsible for the freight, and as the 3PL responsible for moving it. He is Senior Vice President of LTL at Armstrong Transport Group, author of The Complete Guide to LTL Shipping, and the founder of LearnLTL.

Having sat on both sides of the negotiating table and built LTL programs from scratch, he teaches the material most people are left to learn one expensive mistake at a time: classification, rating, pricing, carrier rules, operations, and claims.

The career behind the teaching

The shipper side

Ryan began his career responsible for the transportation program of a large lighting manufacturer — a ground-level education in what it actually feels like to manage LTL freight from the perspective of the company footing the bill: the rating headaches, the accessorial surprises, and the day-to-day pressure to keep freight moving on budget.

LTL pricing analyst → SVP of LTL

He then joined a top 3PL as an LTL pricing analyst and rose over eight years to Senior Vice President of LTL, helping lead the company's LTL division through growth from $400 million to $1.6 billion in revenue and playing a central role in six acquisition deals, before exiting after a successful merger with an industry-leading 3PL.

Building Armstrong's LTL division

Ryan joined Armstrong Transport Group to build its LTL program from the ground up. Over five years he grew the division more than 2,000%, helping establish Armstrong as a top LTL 3PL and contributing to the company's growth past $2 billion in total revenue. He serves as Senior Vice President of LTL today.

Author & educator

That dual vantage point — shipper and broker, builder and scaler — became The Complete Guide to LTL Shipping and LearnLTL: the clear, practical, complete LTL education he wishes had existed earlier in his own career, in an industry most people are left to learn the hard way.
